You might notice some changes in the menu buttons (and you might have to hit the refresh button on your browser to see the changes) I've stopped dating the June pages...we all know its the latest year's pictures and the date is on the top of every page.......I got tired of making custom menu buttons over and over. Too days was not long enought....o.k. my back couldn't have taken any more sun, but that's just Pilot Err, what a great camp spot it didn't get too hot and if it did you could go jump in a lake....which I did several times because it was just right there at my feet when I woke up in my hammock @ Sly Park. Note to self "MUST DO THIS AGAIN".

It's also about not leaving Anna with a construction zone for 6 months while we are back East. Gotta finish...tired of this shi...stuff. I thought being retired was supposed to be all play.
However we do get 3 straight weeks right on the beach (non oily side)come late August and early September at the Outer Banks then Daytona Beach.

Spamalot is located @ The Music Circus
1419 H Street ( The corner of H @ 14th Streets) downtown Sacramento. Because the play is on Sunday, there is free parking. But get there early enough to get it. The play starts @ 2pm. I can wait out front with your tickets. Just let me know if you want to meet there, or stop here and we can all go together. For those coming from out of town, take I-80 to I-5 North, get off at J-Street and go to 11th street and take a left. Then go to H street and hang a right. The Music Circus will be on the left side of the street between 14th and 15th.
Jan-We are going to throw the kids in the RV for the night so you get one of their beds. No need for bedding, unless you want your favorite blankie? Haven't thought about food yet (been a crazy week at work) but I'll come up with something to go with a salad. YUM!!! When do you expect to arrive?

There are web sites that I visit all of the time...daily or weekly...and for some have been visiting for years now. These are mostly small sites (like this one) that's just one geek and a well worn keyboard. They all have "rant-n-rave" postings where the webmaster keeps users up to date with what is happening.

Sooner or later they'll have a rant about how hard it is to keep spammers away from the chat system....or how the hosted server fried. They'll rave about how cool the users/visitors are...about the new programming language they learned/used....or about how much fun they have running the site.

All of this sound familiar?

One last thing you'll always find is the story about how life gets in the way of the web site...or sometimes how the web site gets in the way of life...and they're always behind on the web site...and at the end of the post they always promise to try to do better in the future.

And....that's where I am right now. Kinda behind but I've got some cool pages in the works....you might want to stick around.

Ok Peeps...I worked a lot this weekend. Making up for being at Bear, etc. Suddenly I've just finished paying bills and it's 10:30pm. Gotta get some sleep.....I'll post the first of a two-fer POTW tomorrow.

Chicken & White Bean Chili
2C white beans
2Tblspns chili powder
1tsp cumin
1tsp oregano
1tsp cayenne
1tsp thyme
3-4 chicken breasts, skinned, boned and cubed
2Tblspns olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 stalk celery, chopped
2C chicken broth
4 Ancho chilie peppers, stemmed, seeded, peeled and chopped
Soak beans overnight, drain, place in pot and cover with fresh water. Bring to boil, reduce heat, simmer. In a bowl, mix chili powder, cumin, oregano, cayenne and thyme. Add chicken and toss till each cubed piece is coated. In large skillet, heat oil, add onion, garlic & celery and saute. Add sauteed vegies to pot of beans. Add more oil to skillet if needed, add chicken and brown. Put chicken into pot of beans, add chicken broth and chopped anchos. Allow to simmer for 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Serve.
I doubled the recipe for the chili cookoff.

Fun trip kids! I just browned some pork ribs,steak,linguica and roasted some mild peppers.Then I added some diced onions and garlic added chili powder and cooked until it thickened. Oh yea and a litlle cabernet and budwieser.

WOW.....what perfect water to tube in!!!

Ok...the air temps could have been at least 10 degrees warmer....and the river water temp was never above 52 (brrr!) However....

I had a wonderful time! Thanks to all of the Bear River Tubers that helped out on everything from Truck Runs to Camp Dinners. I couldn't think of a nicer bunch to camp with....you all ROCK!

Now....to take a bath and start unloading Mini-van and RV. Then, take a look at all of the great pictures that I took.

Coming from a guy who kicked his mother out of the house when I was seventeen, tell them now the only way they get to stay in your house after their 18th birthday is if they are in college full time getting a 3.0 or better; or they can pay full room and board and get a 1 year extention. Once out, don't save "their" bedroom.

Kim,
It is a 2 br 1 ba house about 1100 SF and a full basement and clay tile roof. New windows, siding, bath tile, view lot, recent 100% of sewage pipe replaced, newly painted interior, hardwood floors.
However we will be living here until I get my Social Secutity in 2 years (So Calvin keep those SS and PERS deposits coming) so we can afford to carry 2 loans until this house sells. Rehab will be in 2012, so this may not be in your plans.
Everybody.....BE CAREFUL...Steve is so right. I had a dream about blood on a tube.......

Certainly the water will be swift and cold. However, this could be a wonderful opportunity to do a high school run....no butts-up on a high school run?.....I'm ready!

Tubing might be more hazardous than usual this weekend. An experienced kayaker was drowned on the Consumes last weekend and lets not forget the mother who drowned on the Bear last year while tubing with her son. Lets just be careful. No fools who can't steer a tube, etc. There, I've said my piece. Tubers Ho!

John, What's the plan for that house of yours that's being fixed up? Are you gonna sell it? Ray and I are moving to Vallejo next month and will be looking to buy something out that way within the next year. Is it being fixed up good enough to sell to a friend? How many bedrooms/bathrooms? we are up for the chili cook off even tho i've never made chili, mike will make sure to bring plenty of tums! we will also bring a watermelon to contribute to the contest, can't wait, need a break from work or i will soon lose it. John, your ability to prioritize is how you ended up with two houses and early retirement and an new bride, so I g.uess you're doing something right. Steve,
Ginny likes camping well enough, however we have been working on the house pretty solid during our time here. Last year and this year have been dedicated to getting this house in order. It reflected 24 years of neglect inside and outside. Next year is for preparing my other house next door to have a major rehab and addition...bring up to like new with new foundation etc. Down to bare studs. So anyway, this house costs us $1,800.00 a month, so we have to get everything right next door and here so we can sell our current home in 2 1/2 years and move into the "new" home. Retirement is keeping me busy.
Ginny flys back to Virginia at the end of July, then Jim and I will be building a fence and doing other finishing up before I drive back. Between now and then, I have a long list of work to get finished. The place is starting to look good.
I've been tubing 2x a year for 30 years, so missing a year is OK and was my idea.
Our goal now is to be ready for Sly Park in July.

Are you excited?....I am! Just one week from right now and I'll be at BEAR RIVER!!!
I just completed the deal to get a half cord of firewood delivered to the camp site. Lots of nice fires in our future.

John-Yeah, whatever....you've had the dates since January so you get a ration of crap for not planning ahead. You will be missed and you'll be missing out on a lot of fun. Give Ginny a hug from us and let her know that we don't blame her for you guys not going to June Bear....even though you're only two hours away. Feeling guilty yet? There's still time to plan to come up for a day or maybe the weekend!

Got watching basketball last night and totally forgot to call you.
Looks like Ginny and I are going to skip the bear next week anyway and save ourselves for Sly Park. Working on big home improvement projects (much needed) and don't have much more time until we leave for Virginia. Got three weeks at the beaches in the Outer Banks (1) and Daytona (2) late August and early September. Next year however.

Yes, it is true. I have passed the California DMV's three challenges and I now have my motorcycle license...so I can go anywhere anytime on my Vespa! Or I could skip the tattoo and get a huge Harley.....nah, I'll stick with the Vespa.

On another note...with the latest storm the Bear River rain gauge is now above 49 inches! I predict high cold fast water to tube in at June Bear.

Wow....what a storm! The Bear River rain gage is now above 40.50 inches for the year. Anything above 40 inches is a "normal" rain year and with all of the late season snow (the latest storm added over two feet in the upper elevations) this is looking to be a great year for tubing.

Lorrie-Orange flower water is REALLY potent stuff. You don't want to drink it. It is usually added to recipes, or like rose water, can be added to drinks. You had some at the meal where we served shish-ka-bob. One of the African dishes used oranges, saffron and orange flower water. It was a dessert-like fruit dish. I really liked it.

Orange Flower Water is just that...it's made in France and smells like orange blossoms. I guess they squeeze orange flowers...or maybe soak them in the water. Denise bought it for a dish she made a year or so ago. I would certainly be surprised to find it in someone else's fridge!

This latest storm has put Bear River at over 30 inches of rain for the season. You can see the total rainfall for the year by going to the Current Weather page.

I've been doing some research to put this in to perspective:

2009 = 43.5 Inches
2008 = 30.5 Inches
2007 = 32.0 Inches
2006 = 77.5 Inches
2005 = 63.5 Inches
2004 = 42.0 Inches
2003 = 50.0 Inches
2002 = 43.5 Inches
2001 = 30.5 Inches

The California Department of Water Resources dataset that I'm drawing from only goes back to July 1, 2000....the "rainfall year" start on July 1st and ends the next year on June 30th.

As you can see, around 30 inches is a bad year...think last year. Around 45 to 50 inches is a normal year. Anything over 55 inches is a great year.

If things continue as they have, we're going to at least have a normal year...if we're lucky and conditions hold through the end of April, we could have a great year.

Wouldn't it be great if things were as good as 2005 and 2006?

OMG....the Olympic Games have been so cool so far. Shaun White, Hannah Kearney, Apollo Ono, Lindsey Vonn...everyone on Team USA has been doing so well and putting on a show second to none.

However, as much as I'm going USA-USA-USA I hope that our neighbors to the north and this year's Olympic hosts will win gold in hockey...(we, of course, can take silver)...hey, it *is* Canada's national sport after all. Their team is really good...they're nice people...they deserve it.

Happy Birthday King James. Our camp baby is a man now!!
We were also about 12 hours ahead of the snow in Montgomery and Selma Alabama, then Dallas. We came along I 20 then up to I 40 leaving a trail of snow. Back in Virginia we have neighbors and our son checking the pipes and heating system regularly. The pre X-mas snow lasted a month so I imagine that it will be March before they thaw.
out...roads are drivable in about 24 hours however.
Got into Crockett Saturday nite in time for Valentine's Day. God it is green here....the rest of the country is shades of white and gray.

This week's new page features the kids at their gift exchange. This is also the test drive for some new technology. This page plays a "Flash" video. I think that it turned out nice and it does what I want so far. Someday I'd like to try to convert one of my videos to the Flash format...we'll see.

Ok Campers....I had the best of intentions.

A quick e-mail to the DWR staff and the problem was fixed with the Current Weather page. You may want to check it out from time to time starting Sunday....the forcast is calling for a series of big storms throughout next week. Feet of snow in the upper elevations and inches of rain in the valley and foothills. More water to tube in next summer!

It's raining really hard and the darn swimming pool that I emptied is filling up again.....Darn/Darn/Darn. I really need to get with the program and get it sold. We ended up with about 2 feet by Saturday AM. Cleared off the 2 cars Saturday and made a path to the snowplowed road, then parked it until Sunday afternoon.Stayed inside and played scrabble and made wild, hot, monkey love. Just now finished using a transfer shovel to do our walkway and parking area (snow shovel doesn't work once the snow gets hardpacked). It is however beautiful, and out on the back deck and yard is pristine white. The only hot air used was me huffing and puffing.

We are getting ready here for about 18" of snow tonight and tomorrow. The forcast is for snow Christmas Eve and Day. Ginny is like a little girl right now....all excited.

Sounds good Jim....I also thought that maybe the old hard caulk...caulk I say, could be softened and removed if heated with one of those small propane soldering flame, them when clear use the Big Crack Filler to seal it off.

I've posted the first party page...as usual, I'm posting the easiest (relatively) page first....also, I was excited about this project. This is a special page....it's the video I shot at the Christmas party!

However, I'm using You Tube to host the file. Yesterday I tried three different ways to get the file small enough for my server to *quickly* push it out.....let's just say that You Tube is much better at that task than I am. I try not to have external servers involved with the web site (I'm a control freak).....this is one time I have to bend the rules.

I didn't get around to asking everyone....sorry if I missed you (I'm really, really sorry Mom!)....I blame it on Robin's high octane egg nog!

John, we stayed at the Yosemite Lodge, which is right on the Merced River. Our room had a fireplace, kitchenette, jacuzzi tub, and we seem to remember it being about $170/night. Dory made the trip too. Twenty minutes from Yosemite Valley. Lots of snow.

Hi Diana, NO POWER at the Griffin's for three days & counting, we have a power line down and we're small potatoes how far out we live so no end in site. What I'd give for a hot shower. I started thinking about the idea and how to pull it off...as you can see from the date of the chat it has been almost two years. However, if you look at the bottom of this page there is now a link to the Campfire Archives. This is everything but the spam that I have to delete from time to time. When I downloaded the database for testing there were 1320 entries. It is listed just like the current chat page so if you want to start from the beginning go all the way to the bottom and scroll up.

The mud is fun but the real appeal is the thermal pools you can soak in from 8am til 10pm. while silpping ice water and talking trash with your friends. I don't miss the Humboldt gray days from my Arcata years but I do miss the intensity of the storms the come boiling up off the ocean and the 50mph+ winds that could blow the cobwebs out of my head and then taking a long deep breath of crisp salty air when it was all said and done. I miss the rain.

There was a web site service outage earlier today. With any luck, things are back to normal. Over the long haul I've received very good service from 1&1 (my server host company) when you consider it only costs me $4.00 per month to run this web site with close to 100 unique web pages. Sorry about the lack of service....there's not much I can do from work except wait and worry when something like this happens.

Over the next few days I've got a holliday, a 9/80 Friday off and I'm on call this weekend (so I have to stay home)...I'll be working on the Halloween Page 1 so keep checking back as there's some great pictures to see!

Kodak "Easy Share" has changed the display format of their pictures....so, I can't download all of those great pics that people have been sending me links to :(

I'm stuck with the pictures that I took only...unless someone/everyone sends me pictures via e-mail (I know it's a pain to do that).

Folding camp chairs are ok.
Soft sided ice chests are ok.

Glass and cans are no-no's
As well as usual stuff....no booze, etc.

When you get on-site, give us a cell phone call where we can all camp together. There's going to be a party after at our house.....and there are guest accommodations available for those that want to party all night long.

We Virginians need California to keep their weird little redheads in California. That creep from Castro Valley that murdered those 4 people in Farmville, Virginia is giving us a bad name.

Farmville is a quiet, pastoral town....it reminded me of Smallville where superboy grew up. It is also the home of Longwood College where Ginny went to school and grew up nearby on the farm. Her Aunt was her mentor and lived just a few houses away from the house those people were killed.

You might of noticed that I got the POTW posted on-time this week. Kinda amazing considering I've spent most of my on-line time at another web site....it's an on-line comic strip that features a geek from Sacramento that (a) drinks lots of pepsi and (b)use to work at an airport....in other words, me 25 years younger. In the future, I think that I might start a Link Of The Week page.....there's a ton of stuff that I find interesting on the internet and I'm always happy to push crap like this on to my friends.

This weekend is the DAY IN THE ZONE....spend the afternoon listening to music at the American/Sacramento Rivers and on to Crossoak for a big party! You can stay the night if you wish.

Lastly, I'm going to start building those web pages for August 2009 Bear.....soon.

Hope you all dont mind a Thank you from someone who some 30 odd years ago made Dog Bar home, and stummbled across your site this a.m., thanks in part to an old friend whose brain works and remembered the name of the river. Google is amazing when you have the right names...but thru your site and pics, have been able to go back and relive some great times. We lived in Meadow Vista, went to schools in Weimar, and Auburn, and the friend whose brain cells continue to function, went to Colfax schools. Only differance I can see is the campground is cleaner, and what you all call 'Jumping Rock', we called 'Duck Bill'.
But again, thanks for your site, providing a walk back thru time. And will mention this site to family members.

Dallas, Sorry you had to leave your friends behind in San Diego. DO NOT Listen to your Uncle John, CHAW IS BAD BAD BAD don't even think about it. O.K. You can listen to Uncle John a little, Boating and Fishing and just messing around lake Shata is fun. Maybe we sould start thinking of a BEAR Houseboat party? Also there are a motherload of cave systems in your area, with thousand of miles of under ground passages swirlling around under you. Have you ever sat on a beach ten miles under ground? Mt. Lassen also has cool Hot Springs and a tough sinder cone to climb.
And not all of Redding are red-necks, some are new wave area 45 peolpe,there is a reason why the Goverment put a giant space listening station up there, No suban noise. If you do need a beach day -Arcata is only three hours away. You'll need a wet suit, the water's cold and the good breaks are near the pulp mills.

I am still AWESTRUCK by our fabulous time at the Bear! Thank you guys for welcoming Dennis and I (surprise guests) so heartily. We love you all!!! I'm so happy I have all these bruises and abrasions to prove how much fun I had! I don't even have to pinch myself to believe I was really there.

Hey,

Every so often I have to tell my friends when something really cool happens in my balloon world. Well, this is one of those times :-)

There is a convention happening next week in Vegas: first half is for entertainers, second half is for decorators. The climax in between is a fashion show. So here's the blip to the industry:

"NBC’s The TODAY SHOW has confirmed they will be joining us this year. Our special guest and celebrity model this year will be Jenna Wolfe Correspondent and weekend anchor for the NBC Television show. Jenna will be joining us, with her film crew, to do some special features on the Fashion Show, Diamond Jam and Summer Balloon Camp. They will be filming from Friday until Monday to cover the classes and activities at the events."

Since their corespondent will modeling a dress by last years winners there will be at least some coverage of the fashion show. But I would assume there will bo more. Here's a link to some pictures of last year's fashion show just to tease you with why you might be interested in this coverage :-)

Yes, there is running water, picnic tables and a smelly hole - the toilet's don't flush. It will be similar to the camping we do at Bear River, except instead of tubbing down the river, we'll be tubbing behind the pontoon boat.

As the lake is drinking water, dog's & diaper's are not permitted in the lake. This rule is strickly enforced so that will be tough for Dori.

Just thought it would be fun to check out another option to getting the Bear River tribe together :-)

"Griffin's Summer Fling" instead of Spring Fling. I just booked a group camping trip for next year (7/16-7/18/2010) @ Sly Park Group 1 camp ground. It;s on the shore of Jenkinson Lake and accomodates up to 50 people and has a private boat dock. It should be lots of fun :-)

Thanks to all for a great Bear River. I had lots of fun and I didn't get drunk. Calvin, I'm glad Denise let you get the wood, fires are one of the things I like best about camping. The pictures turned out really great.

Happy Independence Day!

The first June 2009 picture page has been posted. Hit the reload button on your browser to see the revised menu or use the link on the home page.

Here are the exciting changes that I've made:

-Pictures are in a larger format. The header picture is a whopping 600x600...the largest picture I've ever posted. The other pictures are 450x300...big enough to print.

-The pictures now load top to bottom. This was a major format change and took some time to pull off.

-The new large format pages automatically adjust for your monitor size. Pages will fit and look good whether your monitor is a new flat screen or an older tube type.

I hope everyone enjoys the new changes!

Good News Campers-
I'm officially declaring victory against the evil spam lords. The Force was with me and I created a program that stops them cold....it just took me 10 days of hard core coding to figure out the correct roadblock.

Hello Campers-
I've built a road block that should stop the evel spam lords. However, I do have to apply the road block every time they use a new IP address so, it will take me a few days to block the currently active addresses and from time to time one or two will sneak through before I apply the block.

Enough geek stuff....

I know I'm behind on the POTW and JOTW....I'll catch up with two next week.

It rained over a half inch at The Bear this week....more water, less fire danger, I love it. You can always see the latest weather data on the Current Weather page.

Hey Steve-
I used Google Maps and it sounds like that 1st time tuber (!) launched from the Highway 174 (The Colfax Highway) bridge. That's about two miles closer to the dam than where we launch to do a High School Run. We've never tubed that part of the river. Sounds like just downstream from the dam might be some gnarly rapids!

Lastly, it's a shame that having never tubed before she didn't realize danger before it was too late. Thank goodness her child survived.

Hey Everyone,
Have a wonderful time at the Spring Fling. I wish I could be there. It's been a little over six months since I've had a drink and I'm doing great. I just don't think I'm ready to be surrounded by a bunch of partying fools. The kids keep bugging me about June Bear, but we'll have to wait and see. Ray retired from the Navy and I was laid off. So there is no one in this house with a job! Ray is convinced that his next job will be as a sandwich artist at Subway. I'm holding out for something better. Anyway...we may be at Bear. I hope so.

Hello Everyone-
There's still lots of snow at 7500 feet and above. On the sunny sides of mountains there's lots of mud (you should see my white City truck) and the American River is roaring along with all of the snow melt. From what I saw there should be plenty of water to tube in this year.

Everything about Denise's job is great (I'm sure you'll get lots of details at the Spring Fling) As for me, starting and ending the day next to my soulmate is heaven. Spending a *lot* less on gas by commuting together in a car that gets 30mpg is the bonus. See you soon at Sunrise Ranch!
